Based in Birmingham, Alabama, KHA leads organizational development, project management, and research and evaluation projects for publicly and privately funded efforts across a broad range of topics. KHA has worked with multibillion dollar foundations with a reach across the sector of over $340 billion of the $1 trillion in U.S. philanthropic assets. Clients include the Blue Shield of California, Annie E. Casey, Robert Wood Johnson, W.K. Kellogg, William and Flora Hewlett, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur, David and Lucile Packard, and Schmidt Family foundations. The firm has been a prime contractor for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the State of Budget Office of Michigan and a subcontractor for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the United States Department of Agriculture.
KHA is currently curating a multi-year racial equity leadership development initiative for foundation executives — The Presidents’ Forum on Racial Equity in Philanthropy. The forum offers a space for executive leaders to explore the leadership challenges and responsibilities involved in facing and addressing racial and ethnic equity. KHA also facilitates a professional development series — Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity in Environmental Philanthropy (InDEEP) — that has convened more than 300 public and private grantmakers since 2016. The firm co-cultivated the resources for the $36 million annual Democracy Frontlines Fund (DFF).
KHA’s work is grounded in equity and aims to assist philanthropic clients in developing strategies that prioritize grantmaking and investments in Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPoC)-led organizations and communities. Its previous work experience includes projects that have ranged from collecting data from community-based stakeholders to conducting a demographic survey of data for a multi-billion dollar foundation. KHA’s staff members have content expertise across a wide range of disciplines and have led work in the field as community organizers and non-profit staff members. They are experienced in participatory engagement of grassroots and BIPoC community leaders and leading organizations.
